Youtube video featuring labtrunc12

I’have recently started a new project: a Youtube channel that will focus on the usage of several Stata commands. I’ll cover both beginner and advanced commands.

We still have only 3 videos published. One of the videos show how to use the labtrunc12 command to enable a Stata dataset to be saved using an older Stata version. The video can be found at the end of this post.

All videos will be in Portuguese, but we plan to add some subtitles in English. So, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and stay tuned!

Baseline study of the Impact Evaluation of the Criança Feliz Program is published in MCid journal

The first paper about the Impact Evaluation of the Criança Feliz Program was published in the SAGI’s Cadernos de Estudos (Brazilian Citizenship Ministry). The manuscript describes the randomisation process used to evaluate the Criança Feliz intervention in 30 Brazilian municipalities. We also present a comprehensive sociodemographic and behavioural description of the sample that will be followed-up for, at least, two years.

This is the largest impact evaluation study of an early infancy intervention program. The link to download the paper (free of charge) is available here.

ICEH team coordinated the ‘Measuring health inequalities’ workshop in Brasília, Brazil

A team from the International Center for Equity in Health (ICEH) coordinated a workshop on how to measure health inequalities in Brasília, Brazil. The workshop occurred from the 20th to the 22nd of November and was attended by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) staffs.

During the course, the ICEH team covered the basics about health inequalities and introduced the software and calculations used by the ICEH in order to study health inequalities. At the end of the workshop the participants had to produce an equity profile regarding selected outcomes using VIGITEL surveys.

The ICEH team was composed by Fernando Wehrmeister, Cauane Blumenberg, Andrea Wendt and Janaína Costa. The workshop was part of the project ‘Monitoring Brazilian inequalities‘.

Study investigating the association between use of mobile phones and neck pain is presented at the ENPOS 2019

A study investigating the association between the length of use of mobile phones and the prevalence of neck pain was presented at the XXI Post-graduate Encounter of the Federal University of Pelotas.

The findings of the study reveal that individuals using mobile devices between three and seven hours have 36% increased prevalence of neck pain compared to those with less than one hour of use. Those using mobile devices for seven or more hours have 76% increase prevalence.

The study, led by Cauane Blumenberg, was presented by Mariana Echeverria, a PhD student of the Post-graduate Program in Epidemiology. Betina Flesch, Fernando Guimarães, Inaê Valério, Leonardo Zanini and Sarah Karam complete the list of authors.

Epidemiology of inequalities book is now available for purchase!

The ‘Epidemiologia da desigualdade: quatro décadas de coortes de nascimentos’ (Epidemiology of inequalities: four decades of birth cohorts) book is now available for purchase at the ABRASCO books website.

The piece, organized by Cesar Victora, Fernando C. Barros, Mariangela Silveira and Antônio Augusto Silva, presents main results of a set of studies that contributed to design public health policies in Brazil. Twenty six researchers, including Cauane Blumenberg, wrote nine chapters covering maternal and infant health aspects.

The book was edited by the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO) and was written in Portuguese.

Truncating variable labels to save databases in Stata 12 version

Sometimes we have to save our Stata databases using an old version. This has to be done, because some people still work with the long standing Stata 12 version. However, when we use the saveold command to do so, we sometimes face a problem with the long variable labels.

For this reason I developed an ado file called labtrunc12 that truncated all variable labels to an adequate length in order to save the database using the Stata 12 version. The syntax is very simple, you just have to type labtrunc12 and all database labels will be truncated. Instructions to use the command can be obtained typing help labtrunc12 into Stata.

Download labtrunc12 from my git repository: https://github.com/cauanebs/labtrunc12

Installing ado files in Stata

Perform the following steps to install ado files in Stata:

  1. Open Stata
  2. Type personal and hit enter to discover the location of your personal ado folder
  3. Navigate to the personal ado folder (if after navigating there is no folder called personal, create one)
  4. Unzip the downloaded file into the personal ado folder

coortesnaweb received a grant for three more years of research!

The coortesnaweb platform was granted with the highest funding range from the CNPq’s Universal Call. The project will receive around R$120.000,00 to continue with the data collection and the development of innovative solutions for Epidemiological research. For the following three years, the coortesnaweb will count with a mobile app to collect passive health research data using sensors and imaging resources.

Two approved projects

Cauane Blumenberg participated of two successful approvals at the CNPq’s Universal Call:

  • Title: Internet-based epidemiological research: evaluation of health and methodological aspects into a longitudinal study using the coortesnaweb platform
    Funding range: C – R$120.000,00
    Proponent: Aluísio JD Barros
    Cauane’s role: coordinator
